Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Investigative journalism serves as a cornerstone of democratic societies, uncovering hidden truths and holding power to account. In Nigeria, the role of investigative reporting in print media has gained increasing recognition, particularly in addressing corruption, human rights abuses, and governance issues (Garba & Ibrahim, 2024). Makurdi Local Government, the capital of Benue State, represents a socio-political environment where investigative journalism is essential for fostering transparency and accountability. Public attitudes toward investigative journalism significantly influence its effectiveness and reach. While some audiences appreciate its role in exposing corruption and promoting justice, others view it with skepticism, often influenced by political biases, misinformation, or concerns about media ethics (Abdullahi & Musa, 2023). This study explores public perceptions of investigative journalism in print media within Makurdi, examining factors that shape these attitudes and their implications for journalism practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The effectiveness of investigative journalism in Makurdi is undermined by mixed public attitudes, which range from support to mistrust. Concerns about media bias, sensationalism, and the credibility of sources contribute to skepticism, limiting the impact of investigative reports (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2024). Additionally, the influence of political affiliations and cultural norms often shapes how audiences interpret investigative stories. These challenges not only hinder the reach of investigative journalism but also compromise its ability to foster accountability and social change. Addressing these issues requires an understanding of public attitudes and strategies to enhance trust and engagement with investigative journalism in print media.
